How to Use

Select an Image
Click “Select Image” to load a file (JPEG, PNG, GIF, etc.). Non-image files cannot be selected.
Adjust the Size (three ways)
Use “Pick a width by use case” for one-tap widths aimed at blogs, social media, email attachments, and icons. If you have a file size limit such as 1MB, press one of the “Fit under a target file size” buttons and the tool adjusts JPEG quality and width automatically. For full control, drag the slider or type the width in pixels to set the output size from 1% to 100%. In every case, the before/after file size is shown right below.
Set File Name & Format
Rename the file if you like, and choose JPEG, PNG, or WebP. JPEG is best for photos — use the quality slider to fine-tune compression. PNG is better for illustrations and transparency. WebP offers modern high compression for supported browsers.
Save the Image
Click “Save Image” to download the resized file. All processing happens entirely in your browser.

Two Ways to Make an Image Smaller (Resize vs. Compress)

There are two main ways to reduce an image’s file size (KB / MB): resizing and compressing. This tool supports both, and combining them lets you cut the file size dramatically.

Method 1: Resize to reduce pixel dimensions

Resizing reduces the actual width and height of the image in pixels. Set a scale from 1% to 100% with the slider, or type the exact width in pixels. If the image will be displayed at a fixed size — on a blog or social media — shrinking it to the size you need is the most effective approach.

Method 2: Compress to reduce data size

Compression keeps the visible dimensions unchanged and reduces the data size by adjusting JPEG quality. At 70–85% quality, the file size drops significantly with almost no visible loss. For even smaller files, try saving as WebP.

Recommended sizes by use case

  • Blog / website images: 800–1200 px wide, JPEG quality around 80%
  • Social media posts: around 1080 px wide
  • Email attachments / document submissions: 600–800 px wide, under 1 MB total
  • Thumbnails / icons: 100–300 px wide

Each of these widths is available as a one-tap button under “Pick a width by use case”. This tool only shrinks images, so any preset wider than the image you loaded is greyed out with a dashed border and leaves the image unchanged if pressed.

When the limit is a file size, not a width

Upload forms, email attachments, and document submissions often set a cap such as “under 1MB” or “under 2MB”. In that case, use the “Fit under a target file size” buttons. The tool first lowers JPEG quality within a range where the loss is barely visible (quality 60 or above), and only reduces the width if that is not enough. Rather than crushing the quality to force a fit, it picks the best-balanced setting that still stays under the limit.

How do I get an image under a specific file size (KB / MB)?
Press Under 500KB, Under 1MB, Under 2MB, or Under 5MB and the tool adjusts JPEG quality and width automatically until the file fits. You can also type any number and press “Fit under this size”. To fine-tune by hand, move the scale and quality sliders and watch the estimated file size shown just below.
A form says “photo must be under 1MB”. What do I do?
Select your image and press “Under 1MB”. Quality is reduced first to preserve as much detail as possible, and the width is only shrunk if that is not enough. The result is shown as “Width ___px / JPEG quality ___ / Approx. ___ KB”, so you can go straight to “Save Image”. The same works for 2MB and 5MB limits.
It says “larger than original” in red. Why did the file size grow after resizing?
If the source image was already heavily compressed, re-encoding it at this tool’s JPEG quality (90 by default) can produce a bigger file even at smaller dimensions. Lower the quality slider to around 70–80, or use “Fit under a target file size” to set an explicit limit. Note that this tool does not enlarge images. A width preset larger than the original (for example “Blog 1200px” on a 500px-wide image) is shown greyed out with a dashed border, and pressing it leaves the image unchanged — upscaling only degrades quality.
Can I reduce the file size without losing quality?
Choose JPEG and set the quality to 70–85%. For photos, the difference is barely visible while the file size shrinks considerably. WebP offers even higher compression for supported browsers.
Does it work on smartphones (iPhone / Android)?
Yes. No app install or sign-up is required — it runs entirely in your browser. Since images never leave your device, you can safely shrink photos taken on your phone.
