How do I add or subtract fractions with different denominators?
Fractions need a common denominator before you can add or subtract them. Convert each fraction using the least common multiple of the denominators, then add or subtract only the numerators. For example, 1/2 + 1/3 becomes 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. This tool shows the common-denominator step automatically so you can follow the whole process.
Why do you flip the second fraction when dividing?
Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (the fraction turned upside down). For example, 1/2 ÷ 3/4 equals 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3. The tool displays this reciprocal conversion as an intermediate step.
How do I enter whole numbers or mixed numbers?
Enter a whole number with 1 as the denominator (for example, 3 becomes 3/1). Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first (1 and 1/2 becomes 3/2). When the answer is an improper fraction, the tool also shows it as a mixed number automatically.
How far is the result simplified?
Results are always reduced to lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. When simplification happens, the step is shown so you can see exactly which number was used.
