Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?
A public IP address identifies your internet connection on the internet. A private IP address, such as 192.168.x.x, is used inside a home or office network and is not directly visible from outside. This tool shows your public IP address.
What IP address appears when I use a VPN or proxy?
The tool shows the public IP address of the VPN or proxy server, rather than the address of your direct connection. To check whether the displayed address changes, switch the VPN or proxy connection on or off and select Retry.
Can an IP address identify me or my exact location?
An IP address alone usually does not reveal your name or exact home address to the public. It may reveal your internet provider or an approximate region. An internet provider may disclose subscriber details through applicable legal processes, so treat your IP address as potentially sensitive information.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses numbers separated by dots, such as 192.0.2.1, and has a limited address space. IPv6 uses hexadecimal numbers separated by colons, such as 2001:db8::1, and provides a much larger address space. This tool detects the version of the address it finds.
Can my IP address change?
Many residential internet connections use a dynamic IP address that may change when the router reconnects or the provider updates the connection. If you need to check again, select Retry. Ask your provider about a static IP address if you need one that stays the same.
