How to use

This tool calculates the chance of assembling every piece of a combo at the same time.

  • Basic settings: enter your deck size and opening hand size, or pick a preset for a common card game.
  • Combo requirements: choose how many different cards the combo needs (up to 10).
  • Per-card settings: for each card, enter how many copies are in the deck and how many you need in hand. You can name each card if you like.
  • Results: the opening-hand success rate, the expected turn, and the cumulative probability for each turn.

Calculations use the multivariate hypergeometric distribution.

FAQ

How is the probability of drawing several cards calculated?

With the multivariate hypergeometric distribution, which gives the chance of satisfying every card requirement at once from a single set of drawn cards. Combo odds that are painful to work out by hand come down to typing in the numbers.

Does it work for MTG, the Pokemon TCG and Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Yes. The preset menu loads the standard setup for MTG (60 cards, 7-card hand), the Pokemon TCG (60 cards, 7-card hand) and Yu-Gi-Oh! (40 cards, 5-card hand). Change the numbers and it covers any other card game or TCG.

Can each card need a different number of copies?

Yes. For up to 10 cards you can set the copies in the deck and the copies needed in hand separately, so a combo that needs 2 copies of one card and 1 each of the others is handled correctly.

How much does an extra combo piece hurt my odds?

A lot. Every additional card the combo needs drives the chance of drawing them all together down sharply. Switch “Number of different cards the combo needs” between 2, 3 and 4 to see the drop for your own deck. To bring the rate back up, cut a piece from the combo or run more copies of each card.

What is the difference between a 2-card and a 3-card combo?

A 3-card combo is far less consistent than a 2-card combo. Keep the copies in the deck the same, switch the requirement between 2 and 3 cards, and the calculator shows exactly what that extra piece costs you.

What is the expected turn?

The average number of turns before the combo comes together. Real games swing either way, but combined with the turn-by-turn cumulative probability it gives you a reliable planning number.
